The BFA degree in Musical Theatre is designed to be a professional training program for those who intend to pursue musical theatre as a professional career after graduation. Admission to this program is by audition only. Auditions are typically held over a weekend in
mid-November and also in March/April of each year.  The next scheduled audition dates are November 14 & 15, 2008 for admission in either Spring 2009 or Fall 2009. We will also hold auditions on February 27 & 28, 2009 for admission in Fall 2009.

Candidates may be admitted to the School of Theatre and Dance Musical Theatre Program, only after successful completion of entrance auditions. (Please note that candidates must also apply and be admitted to the University itself as a separate part of the admissions process.) The following summaries are offered to guide the candidate in preparing an audition. The candidate must meet the threshold for acceptance in each of three areas.

DANCE: The candidate will participate in ONE of the two dance auditions outlined below:

1. A candidate with at least 2 years of ballet training will participate in an intermediate-level dance class conducted by the Dance Faculty. The class will include ballet barre, modern center and improvisation, and a jazz combination.

2. A candidate who does not have at least 2 years of ballet training will participate in an introductory level dance/movement audition conducted by the Dance Faculty.

All candidates are asked to dress in dance attire and bring ballet slippers and/or jazz shoes, if available. IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD DANCE TRAINING, YOU WILL BE PLACED INTO INTRODUCTORY COURSES AND DEFERRED TO A LATER AUDITION.

THEATRE: The candidate will prepare two contrasting monologues, (i.e. comic or tragedy and/or classic and contemporary) from published plays not to exceed four minutes combined. The monologues must be memorized.

VOICE: The candidate will prepare two songs; both must be memorized. Both songs must be from the standard musical theatre repertory and must represent a contrast of style, (i.e. one up-tempo and one ballad). Selections should not be an entire song. Thirty two bars are sufficient. Selections should not exceed three minutes
combined. Please bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. Candidates may be asked to participate in a pitch-matching exercise.

PIANO PLACEMENT EVALUATION: A brief piano placement evaluation will be given as part of the audition weekend. Students who do not play piano or have limited piano experience will be advised to enroll in MUS 17111 Piano Class. Students with a more extensive piano background will be expected to play a piano piece that they have prepared from a score and to bring that score to the test.

We have two excellent theatre facilities on the Kent campus.  E. Turner
Stump theatre is a large proscenium theatre with audience space for 506
patrons.  Dance concerts and large shows, such as musicals, are
typically performed there.  Wright-Curtis Theatre is a flexible,
state-of-the-art performance space that may be set up in thrust or arena
styles.  Seating capacity runs from 200 to 265 in that theatre.

During the summer, we run Porthouse Theatre on the beautiful grounds of
Blossom Music Center.  Porthouse is an Equity Theatre program in which
professionals and students work side-by-side to produce summer theatre
of the highest professional caliber.  We audition both our own students
and students from across the country for this program.  Professional
directors, designers and performers participate as guest artists in this
unique and exciting program.

Coordinator, Prof. Terri Kent via e-mail at tkent@kent.edu or by
